Break out the helmet, clip on the shoes and join like-minded freewheelers on two-wheeled excursions throughout South, and Central Jersey, Bucks County Pa, and wherever the road takes them.

Once the club schedules a ride, they list them according to riders’ abilities. Just starting out? Look for C and D rated rides – they usually have no major hills and if you are huffing and puffing, they’ll pull over and wait for you to catch up. Once you get into the B rides, you learn to ride in a pace line and you‘d better be prepared for a few hills. And once you hit the A group, well watch out. You’ll be tackling hills and know the ins and outs of a pace line.

Rides are planned by members and ride leaders make the call on whether to ride in inclement weather so call ahead to confirm.

But the Princeton Freewheelers aren’t only pedaling. They combine riding and socializing with group activities like picnics, road clean-ups and other activities.

BRING THE FAMILY

Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  And they must be able to go a distance of at least 20 miles.

COME PREPARED

Know your limits.  Each ride is rated by experience level so you don't sign up for a ride that is beyond your ability.  Riders should be able to ride 20 miles, have a bike in good running shape with a spare inner tube, water, and cash for rest stops.  And a bike helmet goes without saying.

WHO KNEW

One of the early editions of the bicycle was built in 1865. Officially called a velocipede, it was made of entirely of wood, even the wheels. Later versions were made of metal but were no more comfortable than their predecessors. Riders who drove them across cobblestone streets nicknamed them “boneshakers” – for obvious reasons.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

You never know when he'll turn up but chances are, you can probably out-pedal the beady-eyed monster.

VOLUNTEER

After you volunteer to lead 10 road trips, you earn a coveted Princeton Freewheelers jersey.  And if you are just a little timid about taking on the leader role, they offer a mentor program to help you learn the ropes.
