So you want to get away from it all. No arcades, no flashing lights, no soy lattes with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Just a day to wander quiet trails, take in some wildlife and revel in peace and quiet.
Aim your car towards Four Mile Springs Preserve and you’ll have more than 1,227 acres to do just that. With over five miles of trail loops that wind through the isolated pitch pine forests and ancient stands of Atlantic White Cedar, you can hike or go mountain biking along the sandy roads (no motors, of course). And if you want to go horseback riding, just stick to the main trails.
If you are into geologic phenomena, stick to the red trail and you’ll hit upon something called a spung. (Yes, you read that right.) A spung is a hydrologically isolated wetland that depends entirely on rain and snow to keep its water levels up. This one has a layer of clay which means it can’t fill up with ground water so whatever falls from the sky is what's in there.
