The lake at the 33-acre Maskill’s Mill Wildlife Management Area is relatively shallow, but don’t let that fool you. There’s a lot of life in them their waters. But first you have to find it.
The pond is hidden in an oak-pine forest, but if you head to Mill Pond Road, you’ll find the launch where you can put in your canoe, kayak or electric-motor boat. Once you head into the waters, anglers are going to be able to catch largemouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie and sunfish. If you are a landlubber fisherman or fisherwoman, there is shoreline fishing near the dam and the boat ramp.
For birders, Maskell’s Mill will have you checking off all kinds of birds from your "life list." You can sometimes spot Green Heron, Great Blue Heron or Great Egrets near the bridge. Once the temps rise, you can spot tree swallows or, if you head into the woods, Northern Cardinals, Carolina wrens and red-eyed Vireos are all around. And during migration season, it is an avian free-for-all with hundreds of species stopping over on their way up and down the flight path.
