Camping
Aaahhh! Life in the great outdoors is great in South Jersey.
Even the most dyed-in-the-wool city mouse wants to commune with nature sometimes and South Jersey is the place to do it. Within the Pinelands more than million acres are several state parks and forests with facilities that let you rough it or bring some of the comforts of home. Around here there’s lots more to do than sit around a campfire roasting marshmallows . . . although you can do that, too.

With more than 115,000 acres of wilderness and four camping areas, Wharton State Forest is a nature-lover’s dream. Pitch a tent or set up your RV at one of 99 campsites, go deep into the heart of the Pinelands for a solitary experience or apply for a spot at one of the nine cabins, each set up to accommodate people with disabilities and furnished with a fireplace, fridge and running water. Then take a dip in Atsion Lake, launch your boat, hike, or tour historic Batsto Village. During the winter you can even go cross-countr skiing on the miles and miles of trails.

The six lakefront cabins at Bass River State Forest are always in demand. But then, so are the nine handicap-accessible lean-tos, six lakeside shelters and 176 camp and trailer sites. Some are open year-round so you can picnic or hike in the summer and go snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter.

Spend the night at the 36,000 acre Brendan Byrne State Forest and you can choose from 79 tent and trailer sites, three group camping sites and three yurts. Need more amenities? There are 3 cabins that have all the comforts of home. Well, most of the comforts of home. And when you get tired of hunting, fishing and hiking, you are thisclose to Whitesbog Village, the historic cranberry and blueberry-producing 19th century village.

Need just a few more creature comforts? South Jersey’s private campgrounds offer families affordable getaways with lots of activities for the kids. Pools, heated showers and bathhouses, activities directors and even cable TV when the kids need their multi-media fix, offer the perfect blend of back-to-nature and civilization.
