Class is in session but school was never like this. The PINES Program (Pinelands Institute for Natural and Environmental Studies) is a partneship between Burlington County College and Brendan Byrne Forest offering hands-on all-age group activities starring Pinelands' history and natural resources.

When the PINES educators set their minds to making nature and history fun, watch out.
Sign up  -- or get your group, scout troop or classroom up for one of their hands-on workshops and watch everyone turn into nature enthusiasts.

Each program is designed to appeal to different age groups so if different age groups so whether you have a group or pre-schoolers, hard-to-entertain high school kids, been-there-done-that college kids, teachers looking for new techniques to engage their classroom or curious seniors who are up for discovering something new, PINES has just what you are looking for.

Most activities take place at historic Whitesbog Village in the heart of the Pinelands but depending on your location, they can take their show on the road and bring it to you. Field trip topics can range from learning about life in a 19th century company town to collecting and testing water samples to learning about wildlife in the wetlands.

PINES also offers special adult programs for bus tours, social clubs or other groups.  And if you can't make it out there in person, keep checking with their website because they adding on-line activities and programs from the comfort of your easy chair.

BRING THE FAMILY

Most of the programs are for groups so it could be a fun activity for your next family reunion, club meeting or other gathering.  But check their calendar because some programs, such as "Daddy and Me" are designed for individuals.

COME PREPARED

Chances are you'll be tromping through the woods so don't wear sandals. Sneakers offer better protection.  And if you wear short, be sure to bring bug repellant.

WHO KNEW

During the peak of its production, Whitesbog Village had more than 90 acres of blueberry fields under cultivation.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

Oh, get serious.  The J.D. was expelled from school for cutting class.  No way is he going to sign up for more education -- even for programs as fun as these.

Removing even little things like leaves or stones can have an impact so if you pick it up, put it back down.  Except for trash.  If you see some and pick it up, please take it with you and deposit it in the next available trash receptacle.
