Looks can be deceiving. Take Scotland Run Park. Its 940-acres look quiet and serene. And the picnic tables are an inviting place for an al fresco lunch or dinner.

But behind that quiet façade, there is lots going on. Load your boat into Wilson Lake using their boat ramp and paddle away or spend an afternoon fishing from their handicapped accessible fishing pier off of Fries Mill Road.

Within Scotland Run Park is a nifty little nature center that buzzes with activities and programs for the whole family. There are oodles of kids programs. And they take care of the grown-ups, too. Their calendar is filled with monthly bird walks which are great for beginners or more advanced birders. There are nature hikes along the trails that wind along the edges of Wilson Lake. And check out the nature study programs. The naturalists there know their stuff and they cover all kinds of topics that will make you an expert on the environment.

WHO KNEW

The Scotland Run Nature Park is home to more than half of New Jersey's threatened species of plants and animals.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

The last time he showed his beady little face in Clayton, NJ was 1909 when someone said they saw his tail hit an electric line and poof!--he was gone.  But since he resurfaced about a week later in Atlantic City and in Westville, it must have been his cousin who got fried.  What?  You didn't know the Jersey Devil had a family?
