Fruitwood Orchards Honey Farm
Fruitwood Orchards Honey Farm is buzzing with activity at their farm market stands, pick-your-own fields and of course, their beehives -- lots and lots of beehives -- which produce sweet, flavorful honey.

The Wright family has a real honey of a farm. The local farmers started out with some bees to pollinate their fruit trees, but pretty soon, the bees took over. Well, not literally. But they had so much success with bees that they started to treat their bees like queens and soon they had whole new set of products to sell.

Fruitwood Orchards Honey Farm turns out pure, raw, unfiltered honey that has just the right touch of sweetness. If you prefer a milder flavor, go for the light colored honey. Darker honeys have a heartier flavor. If you can’t drop by their farm stand, you can order their products on-line. And oh, what a list of honey-based products they have. There are honeys blended with local cranberries, blueberries, raspberries or other fruits. There are crystallized honeys . . . honey flavored sticks . . . honey candies . . . honey comb trays . . . the list goes on. After all, they have a few million bees and they keep coming up with new ways to use their honey.

But there is more to the farm than just bees. Fruitwood Orchards Honey Farm also lets you come onto the grounds and pick your own fruits. When the time is right, you can stock up on berries, peaches, cherries or pumpkins. But Mother Nature doesn’t always use a calendar so call ahead to make sure things are ripe and ready for picking.

BRING THE FAMILY

There's some sweet picking that goes on here for you and the kids. Just check in with the farmers, get your container weighed and then head into the fields to pick-your-own.

COME PREPARED

If you are going to pick-your-own fruit, bring your own containers.  In fact, they suggest you bring several so you don't have to pack them full to the brim. You don't want to crush all the fruit on the bottom.

WHO KNEW

There are more than 20,000 (yes, twenty thousand) known species of bees and they are found everywhere on the planet.  Except in Antarctica. They are hardy, little critters, but even they can't survive there.

SUPPORT

Fruitwood Orchard Honey Farm is a member of the City-to-Farm movement which brings their produce and honey to farmers markets in the city. So if you can't make the trip out to the family farm, stop by one of the local farmers markets and support family farming.

TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT

Take bus 410 to intersection of Route 77 and Harrisonville Way.

Then walk east on Harrisonville Way and turn right onto Elk Road. Arrive at 419 Elk Road. About 22 minute walk.

LEAVE NO TRACE

When a farmer opens his fields for pick-your-own, he stands to lose up to 1/3 of the crop which means he can lose a lot of income.  So be kind.  Don't eat what you aren't paying for, don't pick more than you will take home, and be very careful of the plants so you don't damage them.
