Lake Absegami
It's so calm and relaxing, you'd never know that Lake Absegami, deep in the heart of the Pinelands, wasn't even there until the mid-1930s. That's when the Conservation Corps created the man-made lake that has become a popular destination for year-round recreation.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, you can hear Lake Absegami before you can see it. Actually, what you hear are the sounds of families splashing and swimming and playing in the Lake’s 67 acres of cool, refreshing waters.

Tucked in Bass River State Forest, deep in the heart of the Pine Barrens, Lake Absegami is actually a relatively recent addition to the region’s topography. The man-made lake was created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, much to the delight of generations of swimmers, boaters and nature lovers. The tea-colored waters come from the abundance of cedars that thrive within the Pine Barrens.

Swimming is allowed during the summer months when lifeguards are on duty. With picnic areas nearby, you can spend the whole day catching some rays on the beach and chilling in the waters. Right near the beach area, you’ll find changing facilities, restrooms and showers. There is also a concession stand where you can order refreshments, just in case you forget to bring something in your picnic basket.

If you’d rather be on the water than in it, you can rent rowboats and paddle around. And if you are one of the lucky ones with your own boat, you can load in from a public boat launch at the northern end of the recreation area. But if your boat has a motor, make sure it runs on electric power because they are the only ones allowed on the Lake. Bring your fishing gear (and a license) and you are set for an afternoon of quiet relaxation.

Wrapped around the lake are miles of trails that are great for easy hiking. Bring your binoculars because the area is a great spot to watch songbirds, warblers, blue jays and other winged critters.

BRING THE FAMILY

No family member will be bored with a weekend at Lake Absegami. The site caters to every age group and is sure to satisfy every outdoor recreational interest.

COME PREPARED

You'll have to leave the inflatable rafts, inner tubes and other flotation devices at home. They aren't permitted on Lake Absegami.

WHO KNEW

The workers who built Lake Absegami in the 1930s were paid $1 a day -- not a bad wage considering the times -- and were given food and clothing as part of their benefits.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

Be careful out there. On December 12, 2002, a Tuckerton family was awakened by a terrifying noise that was described somewhere between a dog's howl and an owl's screech. Convinced it was the Jersey Devil, the dad shot his rifle into the air until the horrifying sound disappeared into the night.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteers are VIP's -- Volunteers in Parks.  That's the volunteer group that works with the New Jersey Department of Parks and Forestry to preserve the natural resources.  To lend a hand, go to www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/volunteers.html and download an application.

TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT

No stops within walking distance of location.

LEAVE NO TRACE

You can bring Fido to the beach area, but also remember to bring plastic bags to clean up after him. In fact, you'll need plastic bags for all your trash because the Lake, which is in Bass River State Forest, has a "you bring it in, you take it out" policy.
