Scotland Run Park

Some places were just meant for picnics. And boating. And fishing. That’s Scotland Run Park. You can’t beat 940 acres of parkland and trails for hiking or biking and the 80-acre Wilson Lake. Add in the nature center, where naturalists host dozens of programs for kids and adults, and Scotland Run Park is the perfect place for a picnic … and so much more.

Greenwich Lake Park

The 40-acre spring-fed Greenwich Lake is stocked with trout and open year-round for fishing. The park's boat launch is open on weekends only during the summer season. Visitors also can enjoy watching wildlife in the natural surroundings, use picnic tables and grills and a playground. A picnic shelter and restrooms are available.

A. L. Gaventa & Son

Three generations have now farmed at the Gaventas' 200 acre fruit and vegetable farm in Logan Township, NJ. Ed Gaventa's grandfather bought the farm in 1905, then passed it on to his two sons, who have now turned it over to their sons. The farm specializes in peaches, nectarines, strawberries, pumpkins, sweet corn, and cantaloupe. Ed hopes to use his produce to establish a winery at his Cedarvale Farm.

Bob and Leda Muth

Bob and Leda Muth are among South Jersey's top organic farmers. In 2007, they won the prestigous Mid-Atlantic Master Farmer Award. They also run a community supported agriculture (CSA) system. The CSA began in 2001 with about 30 families, it's now grown to over 300.

When you get tired of the fast-paced 21st century, the Cumberland County Historical Society has the antidote. Actually, eight antidotes. The CCHS manages eight historic buildings and landmarks that recount the county’s past from its prehistoric origins to its 20th century industrial heritage. There is even a genealogical research library open to the public so you can delve into centuries-old records and documents that hold the secret to your own family’s past.

Duffield Farm's Pick-Your-Own

The family farm is alive and well at Duffields. And thanks to the owners’ participation in a farmland preservation, it always will be. The farm has been in the Duffield family since the 1930s and after several generations and several expansions, it is now at 136 acres. The family grows more than 35 varieties of fruits and veggies and they let you pick some yourself, they added a deli, a bakery and lots of family activities

Gloucester County 4-H Fair and NJ Peach Festival

No matter where you look, there is something exciting and fun going on at the Gloucester County 4H Club Fair and NJ Peach Festival. Of course, there are horses, goats, sheep, rabbits and all the exhibitions and competitions among the 4H members who worked so hard on their projects all year. But there are also carnival rides, magic shows, baby parades, racing pigs, and the crowning of the New Jersey Peach Queen.

Gloucester County Nature Club

They’ve been around since 1949 and although they've been at it for almost 60 years, the members, who come in all ages, keep coming up with new and interesting ways to explore, learn about and protect the region’s natural resources. With a calendar packed with field trips, special events, programs, and other activities, it’s no wonder the Gloucester County Nature Club has been around so long.

Gloucester County Parks System

You decide what you want to do -- fish, go boating, play ball, explore history, discover nature, have a picnic, or whatever else. Then visit one of the four parks within the Gloucester County Park System. Well-equipped with scads of amenities and busy with programs and activities, Scotland Run, Red Bank Battlefield, Greenwich Lake or the James G. Atkinson Memorial parks all have lots of ways for you to get out and play.

Heritage Station Pick-Your-Own Farm

Part farm, part winery, Heritage Station in Richwood is the best of both worlds with U-pick orchards for families and activities for kids and an award-winning winery for grown-ups that offers samples from their tasting bar daily. On their 115 acres of orchards, the fifth generation of the Heritage family grows peaches, apples, pears, cherries and plums. From July through October, you can head into the orchards and snap the freshest fruit right off the trees.

Heritage Vineyards of Richwood

Part farm, part winery and vineyard, Heritage Station has more than 115 acres of tree fruits and wine grape vines grown on location. No trip is complete without tasting Heritage's award winning wines and learning about what new seasonal varities will be availabe in the near future.

James G. Atkinson Memorial Park

Make a play date with the family at James G. Atkinson Park. With 66 acres to roam, romp and play, the Park has everything the gang will need for a day of fun. Bring your racquets, cleats, balls and bats to play on the tennis, soccer, football and baseball fields. Playgrounds give the kids places to play and the amphitheater hosts live entertainment during the summer. And of course, the picnic areas are idea for al fresco lunch or dinner.

Jonas Cattell might as well be a superhero. He may have started out as an ordinary man, but legend and history have created something far more powerful and impressive. Cattell was famous for his depth of knowledge concerning the Pinelands. He was even one of the first pioneers to cut several Pine Barrens trails. Cattell's most amazing feat occured during the Revolutionary War when he supposedly ran 10 miles from Haddonfield to Fort Mercer to alert the American troops to a Hessian attack.

Jonas Cattell Run/18th Century Field Day

Back in 1777, the American army pulled off a surprise victory over the dreaded Hessians. Every year, the battle is recreated along the banks of the Delaware River at Red Bank in a day-long event. But there's much more than a reenactment, the day also includes demonstrations of colonial crafts and trades, kids’ games, tours of the historic Whittall House, which was used as a field hospital during the Battle.
