Harleigh is an extraordinary example of a Victorian-era cemetery. Based on the design of a famous French cemetery, Harleigh was built in 1855 and set the standard for both cemeteries and parks of its day. It was designed with a dual purpose: as a place of burial for the dead, and as a site in which loved ones would return to visit them. Harleigh is the final resting place of Walt Whitman, political activist Mother Bloor, United States Senator David Blair, and many others. It is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Visitors may call at the office for a printed guide to the cemetery, or arrange a tour by appointment.
