No matter how much time you allow for a visit to Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, you probably need to add an hour or two. With 20 buildings spread out over 60 acres, it will take a while to do it all. But it is worth the time.
As you wander through the complex, you’ll get a real sense of the region’s standing in the glassmaking industry through displays, demonstrations and even hands-on activities.
Start out at the Museum of American Glass which houses a stunning collection of more than 12,000 objects and works of art in glass. Some are modern, some are historic and together they comprise the world’s most comprehensive collection of American glass.
But there is more going on here than looking at the past. Modern-day artisans work and create and design works of art in their studios at Wheaton. Peek in and watch glass blowers, ceramacists, flameworkers (a glassmaking technique) and woodworkers as they transform raw materials into amazing pieces of art.
Here in “Down Jersey,” generations of settlers have created a delightful potpourri of traditional, ethnic arts, cultures and traditions and the Down Jersey Folklife Center presents it all in exhibitions, programs, music, dance and hands-on workshops. Drop by and see what is new because there is always something new going on. The Center has activities for individuals, groups and school programs.
Surrounded by so much creativity, you might be inspired to tackle your own projects. Let your inner artist sign up for the “Make Your Own” program where you can make a glass paperweight, blow a vase or create beads. Either schedule it in advance or sign up when you arrive.
During the summer months, you can also hop aboard the half-scale C.P. Huntington Train for a tour of the grounds.
For serious artists, Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center offers a variety of internships and training programs.
