One of the best ways to discover the secrets of the Pinelands is to explore it by water. That’s where Bel Haven Paddlesports comes in. The full-service outfitter can set you up with canoes and kayaks to rent for a few hours, for a weekend, or sell you the latest and best equipment on the rivers.

Situated between the Oswego, Batsto and Mullica Rivers, Bel Haven offers easy access to a number of river trips. Go for a short, 2 hours expedition or make it a weekend with routes that will take you to camping sites within the Wharton State Forest.

Bel Haven will get you to and from your portage areas and after a day or weekend of splashing around in the Piney waters, you can change into dry clothes in the changing areas they provide.

If you are in the market for a canoe or kayak of your own, you can take it our for a free “test drive” on the lake that Bel Haven has just for that purpose.

Serious about your water sports? Bel Haven Buddies is a group of paddling enthusiasts who get together for weeknight or weekend trips. To make the trips extra fun, the “buds” bring in historians, photographers, astronomers, environmentalists and other experts that add an interesting and unusual element to the boating trips.

Bel Haven is open year-round, but are closed every Monday.

BRING THE FAMILY

As long as they have a personal flotation device, kids over the age of five are welcome to paddle along with the rest of the family.  Some trips are shorter, which makes them ideal for young kids who might get restless.  Check out the Evans Bridge-Beaver Branch trip (2 hours long), the Pleasant MIlls-Crowley's Landing trip (2-2.5 hours long) or the Hawkins Bridge-Evans Bridge trip (3 hours long).

COME PREPARED

The rivers are gentle, but make sure you bring straps to hold your specs or sunglasses on.  Sunscreen and insect repellant are essential.  You'll also want  water-tight bags to keep your stuff dry.  Weekends can get busy so it is best to call ahead to reserve your cannoe or kayak.

WHO KNEW

The first kayaks were developed by the Inuit, the native people of the Arctic.  Originally, kayaks were made of wood and covered with animal skins and used for hunting.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Bring a bag for your trash so you keep the rivers clean.
