If you are up for a hiking or walking challenge, the trails that snake along Baldpate Mountain could give you a workout. The mountain isn’t going to make the Alps lose any sleep – the summit is about 400 feet – but in this case, size isn’t everything. A network of trails, including some old logging roads wind around the flanks of the ridge and some sections are quite steep and rocky. Be sure to bring your binoculars or camera because if you can make it to the top, you can snap great views of the Delaware River, historic farmlands and – when the skies are clear, the Philadelphia skyline.
But it isn’t all huffing and puffing. The Ridge Trail has moderate ups-and-downs which makes it a good starting out spot for novice hikers and walkers. If you happen to have a horse in your back yard, you can bring it to Baldpate and follow the markers for riding trails.
The mountain is a work in progress and more parking is being added, as well as restrooms and a visitor center. But in the meantime, you can still enjoy a picnic on the mountain and pump up the cardio along those trails.
