If you like old better than new and are looking for items with some history to them, put the 24th annual Antique Glass & Bottle Show on your ‘must do’ list. Sponsored by the South Jersey Antique Bottle and Glass Club, the show attracts top-quality dealers from all along the East Coast. This year, about 100 dealers are expected to show up selling everything from quilts, estate and costume jewelry, small furniture, lamps, coins, and oh yeah, glass and bottles. In fact, almost half the dealers deal in glass, bottles and pottery.

The show set-up starts at the Historic Batsto Village visitor center and stretches back into the village. Despite the show’s posted hours, early birds get there about 8 a.m. and start sifting through the merchandise to get the very best selection which is a pretty good idea since the show attracts about 8,000 visitors. If you plan to buy larger items, it is a good idea to have a van or car large enough to haul it away because although some dealers will ship items, not all will. Oh, bring cash. Most of the dealers don’t accept credit cards.

There is no admission and parking is free. And when you get hungry you can snack on the treats at the temporary food court set up by the local Boy Scout troop. You get to satisfy your hunger pangs and help support the scouts at the same time.

BRING THE FAMILY

Many of the antiques are fragile so if you decide to bring the kids make sure they know ahead of time that touching the merchandise isn't a good idea.

COME PREPARED

Most of the dealers only accept cash so make sure you have plenty on you.  And if you are planning on buying a larger piece, say a chair or dresser, make sure you have a car or truck large enough to haul it home.

WHO KNEW

Some of the bottles and glass pieces offered by the dealers date back to the 1700s.
