Winding River Campground has been in the same family for more than 40 years so they must be doing something right. Actually, your family will find that they do a lot right – starting with where they put their campground. The 28 acre campground is located right next to the Great Egg Harbor which means you get to play and frolic in the river.
But first, you have to set up camp. Winding River has a total of 133 wooded sites – 105 for trailers which have water, electric and sewer and 28 for tents equipped with water and electric hook-ups. If you don’t have your own trailer, you can rent one of three kept on site for trailer-less families – they each sleep 6-8 people. Or rent one of the two cabins – they come equipped with a screen porch, small fridge, propane burner for cooking, AC and heat, two bunk beds and toilet (but you’ll have to use the bath house for showers)
After you get your trailer or tent set up, that’s when the fun begins. Winding River rents canoes, kayaks and tubes so you can splash around in the River. You’ll get paddles, life jackets and they’ll take you to the portage spot. Then you can spend the day paddling the river on one of their 2, 3, 5 or 6 hour river trips. If you are lucky enough to have your own canoe/kayak or motor boat, feel free to bring it with you and use the campground's load-in docks for a day of fun.
If you are more of a landlubber, there is still lots to do. Besides relaxing by the pool, that is. The rec center is well-stocked with video games, a side screen TV and other pastimes and many of the weekends are busy with scheduled theme activities and events. Or just sit back with a book and relax while the kids climb and crawl all over the playground equipment.
As for the nuts and bolts, Winding River has two laundry facilities and two bath houses with hot showers. A camp store stocks food items as well as basic camp gear and items that will add a nice touch to your campsite if you happen to be renting for the season. Winding River is open from May 1 - October 15.
