Every visit to Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge is like coming here for the first time. That’s because animals are always coming and going as new animals arrive in need of care while others that have been nursed back to health have been released.
Each year, Woodford cares for more than 4,000 woodland native animals. And what better place for them to go. Situated in 171 protected acres, Woodford Cedar Run provides wildlife with quality care in a natural setting. Get to meet some of the Refuge’s inhabitants through various educational programs and activities designed for everyone from tots to grandparents. Each month’s programs have a different theme but all will capture your imagination and inspire your interest in wildlife.
No matter when you go, you’ll find hands-on exhibits for all ages. Tots and toddlers can touch and feel and play with natural materials at the Exploration Station while older (and braver) kids get psyched about “Goodness, Snakes!” an exhibit with live snakes, amphibians and other creepy-crawlies.
Of course, you can also explore Woodford on your own. And there is lots to explore. The trail is short – just about a mile – but it winds through quiet and secluded environments. Stroll the paths and you’ll cross Cedar Lake, peer over the observation deck to spot marshland wildflowers and spot the telltale signs of an old iron bog in the area. Or simply head over to the Wildlife Compound and visit with the furry residents whose injuries prevent them from being released into the wild.
