Even though Anderson spent much of his early childhood in Manhattan, he established a connection with nature early in life. Growing up, Anderson lived in close proximity to Central Park and developed a wealth of experience when it comes to the natural world.

Before moving to Gloucester County, Anderson lived in Mount Holly and ran a nature center there. After moving to Gloucester County, Anderson's expertise was immediately sought to help the local nature club compile its book, Natural Places of Gloucester County New Jersey. Anderson also viewed the experience as a way to get to know the natural environment of his new home, New Jersey. He traveled 1,000 miles around the region and explored numerous forests, open spaces, parks, and wildlife management areas. The book now features descriptions of 36 natural areas, and Anderson can readily attest to the meticulous attention he awarded each site, as he considered the habitat, size, viewing feasibility, accessibility, and facilities of each potential location.
