Before you head out to Abbotts Meadow Wildlife Management Area, hit your closet. You’ll need something in bright orange. That’s because Abbotts Meadow is a popular spot for hunters and since the hunting seasons vary by animal, you want to be safe at all times.

Once you get the orange clothes squared away, you’ll find there is lots to see at Abbotts Meadow. Farm fields, meadows and a far-reaching tidal marsh attracts thousands of birds and wildlife. Look towards the hedgerows to find Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Northern Cardinal and Field sparrows. Come winter, waterfowl and wading birds hang around the marshlands and occasionally, a raptor or two. Osprey, bald eagles and various varieties of egrets also hang out here. And if you are looking for wildlife, there are muskrat dens all around the marshlands.

The bugs can get pretty thick, particularly between May and July so invest in some heavy-duty insect repellant.

BRING THE FAMILY

This is really for the serious naturalist. With no amenities, no rest rooms, no food stands or other conveniences, it is best to leave the kids at home.

COME PREPARED

Bring a compass or GPS system so you can find your way out again.  And absolutely, postiviely slather yourself with insect repellant.
