Bear Creek Preserve
It is rustic and rural but the 100 acre Bear Creek Preserve is packed with wetlands birds and wildlife.

Some places are custom-made for hikers, birders and nature photographers and Bear Creek Preserve is one of them. The 100-acre Preserve is a little bit fresh water wetland, a little bit brackish water wetland.

Just north of the Mullica River Bridge, you’ll find a sandy road that begins at the Lower Bank Road access point. Follow it past the swamp of Atlantic white cedars and you’ll get to the point where the fresh water and brackish water wetlands meet. And that’s when things get really interesting. Birds and wildlife that thrive on each of the two different environments are right there in one location. For the best views of the Bald eagle next on the lower Mullica River, head to the dike and just look across the river.

BRING THE FAMILY

This place is pretty stripped down, amenity-wise.  So there are no restrooms, snack stands, picnic tables or other niceties that kids often need.

COME PREPARED

It's the Pinelands and ticks and chiggers love it here. So bring insect repellant.  Lots and lots of insect repellant.

WHO KNEW

The area that is known as Bear Creek Preserve was donated to the NJ Conservancy in 1986 by the Bear Creek Conservancy, a group of duck hunters and conservationists who wanted to ensure that the property would always be safe from development and other man-made interlopers.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

On the morning of February 18, 2004, while outside playing in the snow with her three kids, a woman in Egg Harbor reported seeing a "thing" with cloven hoofs shake snow off a tree near her house.  And when she turned to run, she saw it again on her roof.  Even scarier, the next day, her husband snapped pix of the hoofprints.  Was it the J.D.?  That' s for you to decide.

VOLUNTEER

The New Jersey Conservation Foundation needs volunteers and they'll work with you to find hours that fit your schedule.  Join to help out during events, become part of their permanent volunteer staff, or round up a bunch of friends for a community service project. They'll make it happen. For more information, go to www.njconservation.org/html/volunteer.htm.

SUPPORT

Want to make sure that your favorite open space won't get turned into a housing subdivision? Go to the NJ Conservation Foundation's website at www.njconservation.org/html/give.htm to find out how to support their preservation efforts.

LEAVE NO TRACE

This preserve is for foot access only so leave the bikes at home. Please stay on the trail and avoid treading on some of the unique trailside vegetation. Take your trash with you and, if you don't mind, someone else's if you come across it.
