If you’ve been thinking that South Jersey is kind of flat, be prepared to be surprised. The 338-acre Crystal Lake Park is full of ups and downs and sweeping topography that can challenge even hearty hikers. But don’t get discouraged. Much of the 2 ½ miles of trails is easy-going so even beginners can get a good workout without getting winded. And since the trails cut through the woods, you never know what plants and critters you’ll spot along the way.
Wrapped along the edges of the 10-acre Crystal Lake, the Park is a great place to spot eagles, ospreys, herons, egrets, grebes, ducks and geese. Bring your binoculars and head to the overlooks and you can get views of the marshes, the lake, the woodlands and several rhododendron forests.
In addition to the surprising topography, you’ll find some plants you wouldn’t expect to see in this neck of the woods so tread carefully. Another surprise? After you pull into the parking lot, right near the trailhead you’ll see some commercial beehives.
