Mark your calendars for the second Thursday of the month. That’s when members of the Gloucester County Nature Club gather for their monthly programs and the topics are as diverse as its members. One month you’ll learn about the mysteries of the night sky. Another night you might learn about organic gardening. While another night could focus on the story of the ivory-billed woodpecker.

But as interesting as the programs are, they just scratch the surface of Club’s activities.

The group is involved in conservation activities and they not only work to protect local resources, they stay on top of what’s going on nationally.

Because there is nothing like getting into nature and experiencing it first-hand, the club has an active field trip program. Whether your interest is in wildflowers, birds, kayaking, or a relaxing hike in the woods, you’ll find a field trip you won’t want to miss.

The Club’s annual BirdQuest event has grown and grown and the newest addition to its events calendar, the East Coast Vulture Festival is growing each year. No wonder. With fun activities for everyone from tots-to-seniors, everyone wants in on the peculiar appeal of vultures.

BRING THE FAMILY

It's never too soon to get kids hooked on nature and the annual BirdQuest is a great way to start. The rules are pretty loose -- just form a team of three to six people and head out to the spots of your choice in Gloucester County and start watching the birds.  You can stay out as short or long as you like which makes it easy to accommodate youngsters.  Go to www.gcnatureclub.org for BirdQuest details.

WHO KNEW

In December 2007, a record-breaking 101 species of birds were identified during an annual bird count, including a rare sighting of the Ash-Throated Flycatcher.

VOLUNTEER

There are numerous committees, from planning programs and field trips to helping organize the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count.  For informatin on how to get involved, send an email to  blackbirdsinging@hotmail.com.
