Maskell's Mill Wildlife Management Area
The pond is hidden deep in the Pine Barrens, but once you get there, Maskell's Mill Wildlife Management Area is a delight for anglers and bird watchers.

The lake at the 33-acre Maskill’s Mill Wildlife Management Area is relatively shallow, but don’t let that fool you. There’s a lot of life in them their waters. But first you have to find it.

The pond is hidden in an oak-pine forest, but if you head to Mill Pond Road, you’ll find the launch where you can put in your canoe, kayak or electric-motor boat. Once you head into the waters, anglers are going to be able to catch largemouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie and sunfish. If you are a landlubber fisherman or fisherwoman, there is shoreline fishing near the dam and the boat ramp.

For birders, Maskell’s Mill will have you checking off all kinds of birds from your "life list." You can sometimes spot Green Heron, Great Blue Heron or Great Egrets near the bridge. Once the temps rise, you can spot tree swallows or, if you head into the woods, Northern Cardinals, Carolina wrens and red-eyed Vireos are all around. And during migration season, it is an avian free-for-all with hundreds of species stopping over on their way up and down the flight path.

BRING THE FAMILY

Because there are no rest room facilities, water, snack shops or other amenities, you might want to think twice about bringing the kids.  Unless, of course, they are really into fishing. Then they'll love it.

COME PREPARED

If your boat is motor-powered, only electric motors are allowed.  Bring lots of insect repellant and sunscreen.

WHO KNEW

If you plan to fish, be aware that some private residences and a private camp share some of the lake's perimeter.  So make sure that you stay in the area that is public property.

VOLUNTEER

The Wildlife Conservaton Corps lends a helping hand to the NJ Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. To get more information, e-mail WCC_DEP@dep.state.nj.us.

LEAVE NO TRACE

If you see a leaf or a bug or anything that captures your interest, just take a picture of it and leave it be.  Touching it could disturb a habitat and we know you don't want to do that.  There is no regularly scheduled trash pick up so whatever you bring in, be sure to take out with you.
