The stunted pine trees growing in New Jersey's Pine Barrens are also known as the Pygmy Pines. These pygmies are thought to have developed as the result of physiological adaptation to frequent fires and unfavorable soil conditions. The Pygmy Pines are unique to NJ with a few exceptions. Small patches can be found near Albany, on Long Island, and in Mendocino County, CA. To view the Pygmy Pines, drive east on Route 72 from the Four Mile Circle (where Route 70 and Route 72 intersect) to mile marker 10. As you approach this mile marker, you will begin to see the change in the forest.

WHO KNEW

During the 1960s, a supersonic jetport was proposed which was planned to be larger than Newark Airport, LaGuardia, and JFK combined. If the jetport had been approved, the amazing ecosystem of the Pygmy Pines would have been destroyed.
