Sure, it's in the middle of the summer, but for some folks, it isn’t summer until they’ve been to the Gloucester County 4H Fair and NJ Peach Festival. That’s when the kids in the 4H program, who have worked so hard all year, unveil their projects and compete for blue ribbons and bragging rights. The range of accomplishments is amazing -- watch the equestrians conduct precision exercises with their horses, learn about cows from dairy and beef club members, join in an auction and bid on a hog or lamb raised by one of the 4H members, or give the kids a hand as they demonstrate their skills in dog obedience class. Before you head to the tent to cheer on the kids performing the karate demonstration or get tips on the care and feeding of exotic birds, drop by the barbecue booth and chow down on the yummy ribs, a fair tradition. But then again, so is the peach ice cream. Really, you can’t do the fair without indulging in the barbecue and ice cream.

And there is so much more. Ride the carnival rides, enjoy music performances, watch Civil War re-enactments, even pick up a few goodies at the crafts fair. A few other favorites, year-after-year are the lumberjack contests, baby parade, pig races and for a few laughs, frog and turtle races.

As if that weren’t enough, the fair also celebrates state’s peach crop with the crowning of the New Jersey Peach Queen. And the local farmer with the best crate of peaches is awarded the New Jersey Governor’s Cup.

BRING THE FAMILY

Cute animals . . . competitions . . . food . . . entertainment.  If there was ever an event designed for family fun, this is it.  So make it a date for a family outing.

COME PREPARED

Admission is free, but a parking pass -- which is good for all four days of the fair -- will run you $10 per car.

WHO KNEW

Gloucester County offers dozens of 4H clubs that encompass a wide variety of interests as diverse as birds, cooking, dog training, goats, engineering, handicapped riders, seeing eye puppies, vaults, sheep and others programs.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

On April 27, 2005 after a night of tossing and turning trying to sleep, a woman and her husband who live in Mullica Hill were both startled by the sounds of inhuman shrieking.  Was it the Jersey Devil?  You decide.

VOLUNTEER

Rutgers Cooperative Extension matches the right volunteer with the right project.  If you'd like to be part of the 4H program, be a mentor, help out with the Fair or support their activities in other ways, download an application at http://nj4h.rutgers.edu/volunteering/vol-application.pdf.

SUPPORT

Of course, they need sponsors and financial support to help the kids keep up with their 4H programs.  To find out how you can make a contribution or sponsor their activities, call Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Cooperative Extension of Gloucester County at (856) 307-6450, extension 3.

TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT

Take bus 410 to intersection of Bridgeton Pike (Route 77) & Harrisonville-Richwood Road.

Then walk north on Bridgeton Pike and arrive at 275 Bridgeton Pike. About 7 minute walk.

LEAVE NO TRACE

The kids work really hard to care for their animals so please don't feed them when you are at the Fair.  And when you are walking around and eating your food, be sure to use the trash cans and recycling bins.
