What is a few hundred years old, has beady red eyes, wings and cloven feet? Why, it is our very own Jersey Devil. And even after all these centuries, it could be lurking in the Wharton State Forest. So get your brave on and head to the Pinelands Preservation Alliance for the Friday night Jersey Devil Hunts.

The adventure begins calmly enough with a BYOHD (Bring Your Own Hot Dogs) campfire. (It wouldn’t hurt to bring some marshmallows, too). Then after a little singing around the campfire and a little scary story-telling, it is time to head into the Forest for the big adventure. The 1 ½ mile hike is on mostly smooth terrain, although it is sometimes sandy so watch your step. And, as if it isn’t scary enough roaming through the woods at night with one of the most legendary monsters maybe lurking just steps away, during your hike, your guide will regale you with even more frightening tales about other bizarre Pinelands characters.

So what happens if the beady-eyed monster surfaces? Well, that’s for us to know and you to find out.

BRING THE FAMILY

It isn't super-scary, but children under the age or 10 might get a little frightened.

COME PREPARED

Hunting for the Jersey Devil is very popular so you'll need to make reservations.  Bring your own hot dogs and marshmallows for the pre-hike campfire.  Bring a flashlight.  But leave the alcohol at home.

WHO KNEW

Somewhere in the early part of the 19th century, Joseph Bonaparte, former king of Spain and brother of THAT Bonaparte, is said to have spotted the Jersey Devil while hunting on his 1,000 acre estate which was near Bordentown.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

Of course!  Why else would you be tromping through the woods.  At night.  With danger lurking all around.

VOLUNTEER

If you like helping out at events, they have volunteer opportunities for you.  If you have technical and specialist skills, they could use those, too.  In fact, the Pinelands Preservation Alliance offers dozens of volunteer opportunities so if you have office skills, know your way around a press release, can stuff an envelope, know how to share your knowledge with others . . . check out the website.  They can use the help.

SUPPORT

PInelands Watch is a program that lets you participate in and support the Pinelands Preservation Alliance's programs at a schedule that suits you.  Go to their website for details.

TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT

No stops within walking distance of location.

LEAVE NO TRACE

The mission of the Pinelands Preservation Alliance is to protect and preserve the resources of the New Jersey Pinelands.  Now, where does littering tie into that mission. It doesn't! So if you bring hot dogs and marshmallows for the campfire, be sure to take home the plastic they are wrapped in.
