WHO KNEW
Blueberry cultivation in the Pine Barrens was pioneered by Elizabeth White, the daughter of a cranberry farmer in Pemberton. Elizabeth set out to improve the local wild huckleberries. She selected cuttings and bred bushes from the largest and sweetest berries. With help from Dr. Frederick Coville, a botantist in the US Department of Agriculture, Elizabeth developed South Jersey's high bush blueberries.
