These might be the unscariest scarecrows ever. But when they are this clever, creative and downright funny, who cares about scary. Each year, locals work long hours to create dozens of attention-getting, smile-inducing creatures to compete in the scarecrow contest that is the high point of the annual Woodstown Fall Festival. It is really all about earning bragging rights but you’d never know that by level of creativity and detail that goes into these picture-worthy displays.

And that’s not the only reason you’ll want to bring your camera. You’ll want to snap pix of your friends and family as they cross the finish line in the 5K run. Oh and get the kids photos too when they join in the Fun Run. Oh, and make sure the camera batteries are fresh so you don’t miss out on shots of the youngsters enjoying the live entertainment and activities in the Kids’ Carnival.

But it isn’t all about kids. The over-21 set can relax with a glass of wine and sample the vintages from many local wineries. Just the thing to wash down all the chili from the Chili Contest, a hotly contested – and very delicious – tradition at the Woodstown Fall Festival.

Of course, every self-respecting festival has lots of good crafts on display and Woodstown Fall Festival is no exception. Make sure your charge card is ready to go because dozens of fine artisans and crafts people show up with their wares and there is always something you can’t live without.

BRING THE FAMILY

While the adults are hobnobbing with the silly scarecrows that populate the town or chowing down on chili, the youngsters get their very own Fun Run. And a special Kid's Carnival . .  with entertainment and activities just for them.  But parents can join in, too.

COME PREPARED

Yes, we know the election is right around the corner.  But the festival organizers do ask that you leave politics at home during the festival and just come out and enjoy yourself.  In other words, please don't bring the leaflets, bullhorns,  posters and other campaign-related items.

WHO KNEW

And you thought scarecrows were just piles of hay stuffed into clothes you found on your closet floor.  Wrong.  In Japan, for example, the mythology of the scarecrow dates back to 712 where it appears as a deity, Kuebiko, who cannot walk but knows everything.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

Well, he was sighted in Woodstown in 1935 . . . so you never know when he'll turn up again.
