It’s the age-old question. It doesn’t fit in the guest room and the car takes up all the room in the garage. So what do you do with a horse? Take it to the Mercer County Equestrian Center. With trails that wind through Rosedale Park and Mercer County Park Northwest, the 243-acre Equestrian Center has all the amenities and facilities you and your steed need.

Board your horse in comfort and safety in one of the 31 stalls and two barns. If you are one of the lucky ones who have a place for your horse at home, just load him in the trailer and go for a nice canter along the manicured public trails. And with both an outdoor and indoor riding ring, you can even ride in bad weather.

The Center does not rent out horses for riding, but if you’ve always wanted to learn to ride, they offer English and Western-style riding lessons for all ages, even young ones. A little nervous about mounting a half-ton animal? Then ask about the hayrides or just sit back and watch while others compete in horse shows that are scheduled throughout the year. Oh, and if you really want to do something completely different for a kid’s birthday, this is your place. The Equestrian Center has a party area and you can cap off the whole event with pony rides or hayrides.

BRING THE FAMILY

For every kid  who asks for a pony  -- and isn't that almost everyone -- the Equestrian Center has the answer with 10 minute pony rides for youngsters.  Think of all the money you'll save in hay.

COME PREPARED

Before you reach out to pat that cute horse on its nose, check with the staff.  Different horses have different temperments and some just don't like to be handled so better to be safe.  Also, if you bring Fido keep him on a leash at all times. And be sure to keep him out of the barns and the riding rings.

WHO KNEW

Here everyone can learn to ride, even people with physical challenges. In addition to being easily accessible, the Mercer County Equestrian Center offers hippotherapy - riding lessons for people with disabilities.  For an evaluation or  therapy session, contact them at (609) 730-9059.

VOLUNTEER

There is no formal volunteer program, but they do take volunteers. If you want to help out, call the director and ask for an appointment to meet.
