Plagido's Winery
They've only been in business for a few years but the Plagido's Winery family has been making wine for generations. From their 13 acre winery they turn out 19 kinds of wine -- with more to come this year.

There is an old saying that if you do something you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. That’s an adage that the Tomasello family has followed, turning farmland that has been in the family for four generations and a long-standing hobby into a thriving, successful winery.

With nine acres of vineyards on the premises (they own another few acres just down the road), a tour of Plagido’s Winery means you’ll not only get to see what goes on in the back rooms, you’ll get to walk a bit through the fields before heading into the tasting room to sample what they’ve been turning out.

And what they have been turning out is 4,000 – 5,000 gallons of 19 different kinds of grape and fruit wines that are turning heads. This year they plan to introduce apple wine, chambourcin, vital blanc, Niagara, shiraz to their offerings.

A few times a year Plagido’s Winery pulls out the stops and stages special events where you’ll get a full tour, special tastings and other goodies, such as music or chocolates or cheeses or whatever else goes with the theme.

BRING THE FAMILY

Before you load up the car, make sure everyone is over the age of 21.  This is an adults-only activity.

COME PREPARED

When wine-making is going on the vintners are pretty busy which means the length of your tour and what you will see varies.  So if you want the full behind-the-scenes treatment, call ahead to make sure it is a good time to drop by.

WHO KNEW

Parts of New Jersey sit on what is called the Outer Coastal Plain American Viticultural Area which, in plain English, means that the land is relatively flat, the soil is sandy and fertility is good -- all of which are really, really good conditions for growing wine grapes.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

Back in March of 2006, a driver did report seeing a strange creature with a dog-like face and a kangaroo-like body skitter across the road in Hammonton.  Maybe it was the J.D. on his way to snag a bottle of vino to take back to his lair in the Pinelands.
