The trail that cuts through the 170 acre Evert Trail Preserve isn’t very long -- just 1.5 miles. But it sits smack in the middle of a dense wetlands forest which means you’ll get a close look at the vegetation, birds and wildlife. Some of the trail crosses elevated boardwalks, but the trail is often kind of wet and muddy.
Aside from boots, the most important equipment you’ll want to bring are a set of binoculars -- or a camera because the birding here is really good especially for breeding warblers. Listen closely and you’ll hear Louisiana Waterthrush and Pine Warblers. Male Waterthrushes hang out along the Stop-the-Jade Run. And Worm-eating Warblers (which aren’t nearly as gross as they sound), Blue-winged Warblers, Ovenbirds and Golden Swamp Warblers make it their home during the spring months.
At the top of the trail head, pick up a trail guide which will give you some suggestions on what to look for and where you can find it.
