Mad Horse Creek Wildlife Management Area
You'll go mad for the wildlife and birds that you'll see at Mad Horse Creek Wildlife Management Area.

Use the ramp to load your boat and sail away into the marshy waters of Mad River Creek, where you can hang out all day and fish (be sure to have an updated license) or watch the various birds and species of wildlife that are everywhere you look, no matter what time of year.

When the temps drop and the migration season starts, hawks and eagles and other migratory birds drop in. Wintertime is prime time for waterfowl, so keep your eyes peeled for Brant, Northern Shoveler and green-winged teal. Once spring rolls around, it's time to see Eastern Bluebird, Seaside Sparrow, Black and white Warbler and Orchard Oriole. And Wild Turkey roam around with abandon during the summer.

If you’d rather go by foot or by bike, there are numerous stretches of trails that are especially manageable during the fall months when the mosquitoes, gnats and other insects have taken off. Mountain biking is allowed on existing trails and secondary roads on wildlife management areas from March 1 to April 15 and June 1 to September 15, as well as on Sundays throughout the year. Bikes are permitted on major designated trails year round. Hunting is also permitted, but you will need a license.

BRING THE FAMILY

If your family is into hunting, fishing or birding, Mad Horse offers lots to do. But there is little in terms of amenities -- no restrooms or food/snack stands -- so little ones might not enjoy themselves very much.

COME PREPARED

Before you drop your line into the waters, be sure you have your license and are up to date with all the fishing regs.  To find out what you need to do to stay legal, go to www.njfishandwildlife.com/njregs.htm.

WHO KNEW

Although you might be tempted to enjoy Mad Horse Creek's fresh air, keep your windows rolled up, especially during the summer.  Insect life is heavy here and they'll take one look at you and think "Yum, lunch!"

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

In 1927, a cab driver was on his way to Salem when he pulled over to fix a flat tire.  A hairy creature leaped out, jumped upright on the roof of his cab and then took off.  Sounds like the dude, right?
