Pick a week -- any week – and the Outdoor Club of South Jersey is doing something fun. Whether they are organizing a group camping trip, staging a moonlight hike, canoeing local creeks, running a cycling training course or heading out of town for a cross-country ski trip, there is always something going on. Each of the club’s activities – biking, camping, canoeing, hiking, backpacking and cross country skiing - has its own advisory committee and members have the opportunity to offer input into the program offerings and schedule. And that schedule runs year-round.

Like the membership which is all ages, they have activities for all levels from beginner to expert. And if you are a complete rookie with no experience at all, each of the activities offers introductory and training sessions at various times throughout the year.

Membership is easy on the wallet -- $20 for an individual and $25 for a whole family. If that isn’t enough to inspire you to sign up, an OCSJ member can sponsor you to participate in one trip for each activity.

BRING THE FAMILY

The activity leader has the final say on the minimum age requirement for each outing so if you plan to bring anyone under age 18, you'll need advance clearance.

COME PREPARED

Each activity has its own requirements on how to prepare, what to bring and what to wear.  Check the website for details.

WHO KNEW

On average a person weighing 155 lbs. will burn 493 calories during a one hour hike,  493 calories during an hour of moderate canoeing, 563 calories for an hour of moderate cross country skiing, and 563 calories of moderate biking at 12 - 14 mph.

VOLUNTEER

Everything about Outdoor Club of South Jersey depends on volunteers -- committee chairs, club officers, and everything else it takes to keep the group going. They also participate in clean-up activities and volunteer to represent the club at various festivals throughout the region to promote not only their own outdoor activities but also conservation and protection of natural resources.  Log onto the website and download a memberhsip application.

SUPPORT

Although it isn't an official clearninghouse, OCSJ actively spreads the word about other organizations' activities and events that support and promote conservation and protection of natural resources.  Check the OCSJ website for info about their own and other groups upcoming events.
