Trout lakes are stocked at various times throughout the year and the schedule varies so check with the Division of Fishing and Wildlife (DFW) to find out how often your favorite fishing hole gets new stock. If wild trout fishing is your preference, three are several streams just filled with those little fishies in season.
Along the Delaware River, anglers can stuff their creels with various species of bass, shad, sturgeon, and other freshwater species.
Throughout the year, the DFW holds various events and tournaments for all ages. Not sure fishing is for you? Take advantage of the annual free fishing weekend in June when you can test out the sport before springing for a fishing license.
There’s more than deer in them ‘thar woods. South Jersey’s Wildlife Management Areas have some of the best waterfowl hunting on the East coast. Snow geese, brant, black duck, mallard, bufflehead and a variety of other waterfowl species provide extensive hunting opportunities, especially on the coastal marshes. And there are more than 100 days in the various seasons when you can use bow, shotgun or muzzleloading rifles.
And just in case you think this is a guys-only activity, think again. Each year, the DFW hosts New Jersey Outdoor Women programs at various parks and gamelands. The agendas vary but you could learn the kayak fishing, introduction to archery, fly-fishing, and, should you happen to catch something, information on getting your fish from the hook to the plate. OK, there are also Outdoors for Everyone programs, too for anyone who wants to learn more ways to go out and play.
