Preserves, Birding & Wildlife Watching
South Jersey's nature preserves are an oasis for birds, wildlife . . . and people, too!

If you are a newcomer to discovering the wonders of nature, check into some of the preserves that have education centers. They usually offer year-round programs and activities for all ages with particular attention to things for kids to do.

Other preserves simply offer a quiet refuge where you can roam around and enjoy nature at your own pace. But no matter where you find yourself, remember. Leave nothing behind but your footprints.

As part of a larger natural area that spans about 10 miles, the wetlands in the Oswego River Preserve are a refuge for all kinds of green growies. Aside from the cedar swamps, pitchland forests, and pine barren savannas, you’ll find delicate and rare ferns found only here.

Kids and families can get acquainted with Mother Nature at the Rancocas Nature Center. Meet local birds, animals and other wildlife during special programs held throughout the year. Or wander the gentle trails and you just might come face to face with the deer that roam the area.

Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve used to be a working farm but today it is reverting to its natural state with an unusual cluster of red oaks and a jumble of wildflowers, perfect for those picture-taking moments.

You can’t talk about nature preserves without talking about the Pinelands Preservation Alliance. With about a million or so acres to protect, they keep tabs on what is happening. You want info on the delicate ecosystems within the Pine Barrens? They’re your team. Want to join in on a nature walk or wetlands adventure? Check them out.
