Jersey Fresh produce is ripe for the pickin'

Throughout the year South Jersey farmers plant and plow, growing fresh and flavorful “Jersey Fresh” produce. From spring through late fall, local farmers load up their trucks with the best of the week’s harvest and bring their fresh-from-the-fields fruits and veggies, eggs, flowers, meats to dozens of farmers markets throughout the region. Everything is fresh and the prices sure beat the supermarkets. And some farmers markets turn into a party with food and entertainment for the whole family.

Pick a peck of whatever-is-in-season at dozens of South Jersey’s U-Pick farms. And after the family has loaded up their baskets, the kids can romp around and the activities, rides, and attractions that make a day at the farm a fun, family activity.

Amalthea Cellers Winery

Now the beverage of kings is being created in South Jersey and it is capturing the attention of wine experts from around the world. Under Louis Caracciolo’s hands-off approach, Amalthea Cellars recently was the upset winner in an international blind taste-test, beating entries from France, California and other top wine districts.

Creamy Acres Farm

Whether you are a city mouse or a country mouse, you’ll enjoy a trip to Creamy Acres Farm. Owned by the same family for more than 40 years, the farm has something for the whole family. Greenhouses, dairy farm tours, landscaping services, pick-your-own pumpkin patches and other activities, keep folks coming back all year long.

Fruitwood Orchards Honey Farm

It’s a bee-autiful day so head to Fruitwood Orchards Honey Farm. But this isn’t your usual farm. In addition to growing fruits and veggies and opening their fields up so you can pick-your-own berries, peaches, pumpkins and other crops, and having their own farmstand in case you’re not in the mood to do all that work yourself, the Wright family raises bees. Millions of bees. Which means you can choose from dozens of flavors and products that use their pure, unfiltered honey.<

Hallock's U-Pick Farm & Greenhouses

When supermarket produce just won’t do, don some old jeans and sneakers that you don’t mind getting a little dirty and head to the Hallock UPick Farm and Greenhouse. From June until November, the fields are ripe with produce that you can pick for yourself. Or let the pros do it and pop into the farm market to stock up on whatever they brought in from the fields. The Greenhouse, open May through July, also sells what you need to grown your own.

Heritage Station Pick-Your-Own Farm

Part farm, part winery, Heritage Station in Richwood is the best of both worlds with U-pick orchards for families and activities for kids and an award-winning winery for grown-ups that offers samples from their tasting bar daily. On their 115 acres of orchards, the fifth generation of the Heritage family grows peaches, apples, pears, cherries and plums. From July through October, you can head into the orchards and snap the freshest fruit right off the trees.

Heritage Vineyards of Richwood

Part farm, part winery and vineyard, Heritage Station has more than 115 acres of tree fruits and wine grape vines grown on location. No trip is complete without tasting Heritage's award winning wines and learning about what new seasonal varities will be availabe in the near future.

Hopewell Valley Vineyards

Take acres of sandy New Jersey soil, a third-generation winemaker, and a flair for creating lively events and you have the secret to Hopewell Valley Vineyard’s success. Well, that and a talent for making award-winning wines. Bring a picnic lunch or just a sandwich and enjoy an afternoon taking in the view from the deck with sweeping views of the vineyard. Or join in the Friday evening happy hours, monthly music events, wine release parties and other festivities.

Johnson's Corner Farm

For four generations, various members of the Johnson family have been tilling the fields growing berries, corn, peaches, apples and other Jersey Fresh produce. Spend a day on the farm and pick what they have been growing, go on a hayride and visit the barnyard animals. Then if you are bitten by the growing bug, pick up hanging baskets, annuals and other supplies at the greenhouse. Bring last year’s pots and they’ll even plant them for you.

Lee Turkey Farm

No need to wait for Thanksgiving to spend a day at Lee Turkey Farm. Since 1868, the Lee family has been working the land, growing fresh fruit and produce and providing fresh turkeys on their 54 acre farm. Pick up a whole bird or take home a few drumsticks and wings. Best of all, the Lees use no growth hormones or medications and feed their birds a natural feed mix. You can also head into the orchards and pick whatever is in season.

Mood's Farm Market

Since the 1870s – yes, that’s almost 140 years, the Mood Family has tilled the soil here in Gloucester County, growing farm-fresh produce. Now you can pick your own or just drop by the farm market and stock up on whatever the farmers have brought in from the fields. When the temps drop, drop by again for their apple and pumpkin hayride events.

Natali Vineyards LLC

If you want to score a bottle of beach plum wine which Natalli Vineyards will release around Thanksgiving, get to their tasting rooms early. The vineyard, which planted its first vines in 2000, has been growing rapidly, turning out 2,500 bottles of red, white and fruit wines this year. But when they started working with Rutgers University on their beach plum wine, last year they sold out so quickly it would make your head spin.

For generations, the enormous iconic Renault wine bottle on the New Jersey roadside has stood for high-quality, locally produced wines. And while the winery has changed, the vintner’s commitment to good taste hasn’t. The 1,500 acre complex is a favorite spot for wine-tasting, tours, and special events. Spend a night or two at the hotel, dine in their restaurants and then tee-off at the custom-designed golf course that is framed by some of Renault’s original vines.

Riverside Homestead Farm at Taylor's Lane

There is something special about land that has been in the family for years. You can feel that energy when you visit River Side Homestead Farm, a pick-your-own farm that has been in the Taylor family for nine generations. Today, even after donating an 89-acre conservation easement to the New Jersey Natural Lands Trust, they still grow top-quality, organic produce which you can pick yourself or purchase from a roadside stand. Russo's Fruit and Vegetable Market

For some families, farming is more than a way of life – it’s a passion. And the Russo family is one of them. For nearly 100 years, the Russo’s have been providing the Burlington area with Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as delicious assortments of fresh pies, muffins, rolls, bread, cookies, and their famous Apple Cider Donuts. Visit them at their farm in Tabernacle or at their stand at the Trenton Farmers' Market.

Russo's Orchard Lane Farm

Traveling through the New Jersey country side on a winding, tree-lined road, you will come to Russo's Orchard Lane Farm, which is a family owned and operated 250-acre fruit, vegetable, and greenhouse tomato farm. All of their farm produce is picked fresh daily and sold in their farm market. Russo’s also offers a fine selection of other fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies, cider, fall decorations, Christmas trees, and so much more!

Sager/Reeves Farm

This roadside market specializes in fresh, locally-grown blueberries. Snacks and refreshment stand also available. Open daily during the month of July.

Strawberry Hill Farm

They like to keep things simple at Strawberry Hill Farm. Everything here on this 75 acre farm is pick-your-own. From sometime in July through Halloween, you can drop by, chat with the farmers and then head into the fields to snap peaches, nectarines, plums, pears and apples off the trees. Take a minute though to give Lucy, the black lab pup, a pat on the head.

Terhune Orchards

The family farm is alive and well, thanks to the folks at Terhune Orchards. From their 200 acres, the Mount family produces more than 35 kinds of crops, many of which you can pick for yourself. If do-it-yourself farming isn’t your thing, drop by the farm market, an old barn that is packed with their field-fresh produce. And they have lots of activities and programs for kids with live animals, hay rides, parties and more.

Valenzano Winery

Drop by and sample the fruits of the Valenzano family’s winemaking expertise. Situated in the heart of the Pine Barrens, the Valenzanos have turned a hobby into a major winery, specializing in red, white and specialty wines from fruits harvested on nearby farms. Complementary tastings in the cozy wine room are offered Thursday – Friday, 11-5 and Friday-Saturday, 11-4.

West Cape May Farmers' Market

Look for Jersey tomatoes and lopes (the local jargon for cantaloupes), freshly picked corn, peaches and all sorts of green healthy stuff to eat.

Whitesbog Blueberry Festival

When Elizabeth White cultivated the first blueberry early in the 20th century, she couldn't have foreseen how the little fruit would become so popular it would have its own festival. Held at Whitesbog Village, the birthplace of the blueberry, the day-long event celebrates everything blueberry and features tours of local bogs, music, entertainment, children's crafts and other activities that celebrate the culture of the Pinelands.

Whitesbog Historic Village

Standing in front of the turn-of-the-century general store, you can almost imagine Historic Whitesbog Village when it was a bustling company town and the center of New Jersey’s cranberry and blueberry industries. Surrounded by pine forests, cranberry bogs and trails winding throughout Whitesbog Village, many of Whitesbog’s historic buildings still stand.
