Samuel Gordon Giberson

Samuel Gordon Giberson, a memeber of the renowned Giberson family of Ocean County, was well known in the area for his talent on the fiddle. Playing for the Pinelands in the middle 1800s, Giberson was nicknamed by the community, "Fiddler Sammy Buck." He would play at social gatherings and in local taverns.

Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center

If you need proof that a picture is worth a thousand words, a visit to The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center should do the trick. Thousands of photos and artifacts recall the history of Seabrook Farms and tell the dramatic stories of the Japanese, Peruvian, Appalachian, European and Caribbean refugees and immigrants who lived and worked at Seabrook Farms during World War II.

As soon as someone comes up with the words to describe the sunsets at Sunset Beach, we’ll let you know. Meanwhile, “spectacular,’ ‘breathtaking,’ and ‘mesmerizing’ will have to do. Located at the southernmost tip of New Jersey, the skies over Sunset Beach are slathered with scarlet, fuschia, pink and gold. With the patriotic flag-lowering tradition and the year-round abundance of birds and waterfowl, a visit is a remarkable experience.

The Blueberry Factory

Distributor and Retailer of Quality Blueberry Products New Jersey is the "bithplace" of the cultivated blueberry. Hammonton, "The Blueberry Capital of the World," is nestled in the Pine Barrens located in South Jersey. South Jersey is a natural habitat for both blueberries and cranberries. The Blueberry Factory offers a wide selection of Jersey blueberry products. Highlights include jams, jellies, and syrups along with great gift baskets and souvenir clothing.

The Lighthouse Center for Natural Resource Education

Why just look at nature when you can reach out and touch it. Carefully, of course and under the guidance of the educational staff at The Lighthouse Center for Natural Resource Environmental Education Foundation. Using the maritime forest, salt marsh, tidal streams and other resources in the 194 acre coastal habitat as a living classroom, groups get hands-on, interactive experiences with nature. Members can also take advantage of the birding and wildlife viewing opportunities.

The Wetlands Institute

Pssst. Want to know where all the action is on the Jersey shore? The Wetlands Institute. You read right. Spread out over 6,000 acres of pristine salt marsh, TWI is buzzing with activity. For one thing, the place is world-famous for its research with diamond-back terrapins. Then there are all the trails, the observation tower, hands-on exhibits, an aquarium, and land and water-based activities that will get everyone excited about protecting the environment.

Union Lake Wildlife Management

Great boat ramps, a booming bass population, and trails that wind through the woods and near the shores. For fans of the great outdoors, it doesn’t get much better than Union Lake Wildlife Management Area. At 5,000 acres, it is one of the largest wildlife management areas in New Jersey and it is surrounded by so many varieties of wildlife that even experienced anglers, birders and hunters will be impressed.

A boardwalk and trail will take you over a Pine Barrens bog that supports a variety of plants, including rare curly grass ferns, sundews, and pitcher plants. The area is part of a cedar swamp that had been cleared and is in the process of regeneration.

West Cape May Farmers' Market

Look for Jersey tomatoes and lopes (the local jargon for cantaloupes), freshly picked corn, peaches and all sorts of green healthy stuff to eat.

Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center

Back in the day – that would be 1789 –the nation’s first glassmaking factory opened in South Jersey launching an industry that would define the region for almost two centuries. That heritage is preserved at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, a complex that combines a nationally-recognized glass museum, glass making studios, Down Jersey Folklife Center, tours, and educational activities. You can even try your hand at blowing your own glass artwork in their studio.

Winding River Campground

Even in camping it all comes down to location, location, location. And you can’t get a location much better than Winding River Campground’s. Situated along the Great Egg Harbor River, the campground’s 105 trailer sites and 28 tent sites (as well as their 2 rental cabins) get the benefit of cool river breezes as well as lots of opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and tubing down this Wild and Scenic River.
